From October 6th 2017 until April 27th 2018, St Cross will work with the The Boaz Trust in running its first ever night shelter for destitute asylum seeking and refugee women. Read more about the important work of the Shelter here.
For this project to run smoothly we will be looking for volunteers. There are a number of interesting ways in which anyone can be involved, depending on availability and commitment. They are –
Co-ordination: Liaising with Boaz, co-ordinating volunteers.
Reception: Being there to welcome the guests, helping with the meal and generally being around to chat. This is normally between 8.00pm(approx.) and 10pm.
Cooking and serving the evening meal: this can be done on-site or the meal can be brought pre-cooked.
Overnight supervision: Two volunteers are required to stay overnight.
Breakfast: This can be done by the overnight volunteers or someone different. A simple breakfast of cereal/toast is usually sufficient.
Driving: For locations further afield we need drivers to pick up the clients from the city centre in the early evening, and possibly some to drop them off in the morning.
Laundry: Week to week, sleeping bag liners, pillow cases and towels need washed and returned ready for use.
Please speak to Fr. Chris or Joanne Owens, our BNS Co-ordinators, if you can help in any way.
We currently have all the volunteers needed for this project with the exception of Drivers- if you think you could help with this please contact Fr. Chris.
Working with local Primary Schools and businesses, our Foodbank is helping those families most in need in our area. To read more about the Foodbank, click here.
There are a few ways to help with this depending on your time and resources-
Donations: Of non-perishable foods and also money to enable us to purchase some fresh foods each week. (Examples of the foods we need can be found on our Foodbank page.)
Volunteers: To help on Saturday mornings when families come to church to collect their food. We need people to help in the cafe (making tea/coffee/squash/toast etc.) and chatting to the families and making sure they have the right (pre-sorted) food bags.
Donations/Fundraising: For materials and supplies/equipment. If you think you may have supplies we could use, please ask one of our team to find out if they would be useful at this time as we have limited storage space.
Volunteers: Sunday School Helpers to assist our Sunday School Leaders on a rota basis or an occasional fill-in in case of illness/holidays etc.
Please speak to Fr. Chris or our Sunday School Leader/Co-ordinator Joanne Owens if you think you may be able to help.
Upkeep and maintenance of the Church Building and Churchyard
Occasional help with general cleaning and maintenance within the building and grounds when required is much appreciated.
Interior: We need help on an as-and-when basis to give the church interior an extra spruce-up before big events/services.
Grounds: We need help with certain tasks within the churchyard, such as tidying and replanting flower beds around the entrances) on an as-and-when basis.
We will ask in church or on our Facebook Page when we need help with these jobs so please keep an eye out for requests!
If you have specific skills (eg. Plumber, Electrician, etc.) and would be happy to help us as and when the need arises, please let Fr. Chris have your details.
